Drat! Sorry--I completely forgot about posting this morning. I keep thinking it's Tuesday. Thank you, Logan, for posting and reminding me.
Okay, two more titles on the docket. Let's see if we can get THREE separate stories in the comments! (I shall flog myself until I do my share). :)

The world around Amar was very cold. The ground was frosted like a bowl of Frosties, and a patient observer would see Amar's breath condense in fanciful patterns, although they were faint and shallow. The sun made everything sparkle, shattering itself on thousands of tiny crystals of ice. In short, it was some of the most unlikely weather to encounter a thunderstorm.
Amar could feel the hair on his forearms rising. He tapped the prayer staff twice, and they settled, but respite was brief. The spirits were close, then. Amar recited the prayer of the bear spirit, great and strong enough to protect him against whatever spirit was coming; and the prayer of the hawk spirit following, to see what it was that came.
Amar's eyes were closed, but his soul was open wide, and the spirit world was laid out before him. There were bear and hawk, his chosen companions - any more than two tended to fight, but Bear and Hawk were well-matched. Bear was too large for Hawk to try and attack, and Hawk was too swift for Bear to catch - and besides, large furry animals weighing half a ton are not known for their ability to fly.
Hawk and Bear kept a close watch, and Amar strained his senses as far as they could go, but none of the could see anything, and still the hairs on his skin bristled, a stern warning.
The sky darkened quickly; Amar could see the darkening even through his closed eyelids, and it felt like a blanket being thrown over him. There was a boom, like a great footstep in the hilltops, but neither him nor his companions could see anything.
The sky darkened more. It seemed like it must be night outside, but Amar dared not take his eyes away from the spirit world. It was Hawk that saw it first, and gave a cry; Bear rose up, then down again, and put his paws over his nose. Amar stared in wonder and terror.
The thunderbird flew at him in a streak of blue, knocking Hawk from the sky. The ground trembled as though the thunderbird were a score of elephants pounding the earth as they ran, but te thunderbird never touched the ground. Amar could feel the hair on his head stand up, so great was the spirit's presence.
He saw the thunderbird's great yellow eye. Then there was white. Then there was nothing.
The next morning, a bear came from the woods below the sacred hill, and sniffed around the spot Amar had awaited the thunderbird. It had just woken from hibernation, and it was hungry. The corpse on the sacred hill was a little bit overcooked for its taste, but when it comes down to it, a hungry bear is not a fussy eater.
ACK! I HAVE EIGHT DAYS TO WRITE AND POST ELEVEN STORIES!!
=|
i wanna, i really do. i apologize for my extreme slackerness. *hangs head*
Yes, well, I have clearly misplaced the flog I so flippantly spoke of in the post, so you're hardly alone. In fact, Logan is the only one who's alone in this scenario.
Bless you, Logan! You keep hope alive!
I keep hope alive only to make up for the paramecium I am unable to. Rest in piece, gentle paramecium.
